I began bowling in 1956 while serving in the US
Navy in San Diego, California. My 1st year’s averages were
131 and 158. The next year I purchased a new Manhattan rubber ball and
Hyde shoes, practiced approximately 20 games per week and my average
went to 198.
After leaving the services in 1959, I put away my
bowling equipment and did not pick it up again until 1963. My goal was
to average high enough to qualify for the Pacific Coast Professional
Bowler’s Tour which required a minimum 195 average for 2 years. By
practicing an additional 50 games per week I was able to average in the
low 200’s by 1965 and have maintained an average above 200 for the last
fifty years. High average attained was 218 in 1969 and I bowled with a
team that had 5th high league game in the nation with 989.
High game that year was 1004 which came out of the same league. Our four
man team average in the 1968-1969 season was 848 which were quite high
considering the conditions in those days.
Bowling was at its’ peak in the 60’s and 70’s and
with league, tournaments and pot games I was bowling between 100 and 150
games per week. My high series back in those years was 766 and high game
was 299. Since that time, I bowled five 300 games and two 800 series
with a high of 824. Since moving to Greeley, highlights were winning the
City Masters Tournament and all events in my age bracket in the Colorado
State Tournament.
